Shabat Jevron

Becky, who belonged to a synagogue group devoted to visiting and helping the sick members of her congregation (bikur cholim) , was out making her rounds visiting homebound patients when she ran out of gas. As luck would have it, a gas station was just a block away. She walked to the station to borrow a gas can and buy some gas. The attendant told her the only gas can he owned had been loaned out but she could wait until it was returned.

Since Becky was on the way to see another patient, and behind schedule, she decided not to wait and walked back to her car. She looked for something in her car that she could fill with gas and spotted the bedpan she always had handy for needy patients.

Always resourceful, she carried the bedpan to the station, filled it with gas, and carried the full bedpan back to her car which was decorated with many Hebrew decals and bumper stickers. As she was pouring the gas into her tank, two men watched from across the street. One of them turned to the other and said:

"If it starts, I'm converting to Judaism."

Israel to get its own ‘Tea Party’ movement
By GIL HOFFMAN

Move over America. Israel is joining the tea party.

A new grassroots effort is beginning that is modeled after the American conservative social movement. The Israeli version promises to be just as patriotic, just as provocative and just as antagonistic to US President Barack Obama.

The movement will hold its opening rally on Sunday night at the Zionist Organization of America House in Tel Aviv under the banner “Saying no to Obama.”

The immediate goal of the movement will be to pressure Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu not to give in to Obama’s demand that Israel renew the construction moratorium in Judea and Samaria.

Israeli Tea Party spokeswoman Sarah Tiktinsky predicted that Obama would renew efforts to push Israel following next Tuesday’s midterm elections in the US, and said Obama’s leverage on Netanyahu must be countered with equal force by the Right.

“Netanyahu has been under intense pressure from Washington,” Tiktinsky said. “History has proven that Bibi caves in to pressure, so something must be done to stop him. No one in the Likud faction is taking the serious steps to stop him, so it must come from the grassroots.”

Current and former politicians will take part in the event, including Likud MKs Ayoub Kara, Danny Danon and Yariv Levin, as well as former Likud MK Michael Kleiner, who is one of the rally’s organizers. Settler leaders will also be welcomed, led by Shomron Regional Council Chairman Gershon Mesika, who has publicly compared Obama to Haman and Antiochus.

The Tea Party movement in the US began in 2009 with protests against Obama’s economic policies and spread like wildfire across America. It is named after the 1773 Boston Tea Party, in which American colonists demanded “No Taxation without Representation.”

Half a million call on Lula to help free Schalit
By JONAH MANDEL

AMISRAEL organization demands that Brazil's president get directly involved in the efforts to release the captive soldier.

Over half a million signatures from Latin America have been garnered over the past two weeks, demanding the direct involvement of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the efforts to release captive IDF soldier Gilad Schalit.

The AMISRAEL organization informed Schalit’s father, Noam, of the initiative at a press conference in Jerusalem last Thursday.

The group hopes to reach the million-mark within another two weeks. In addition, the Brazil-based non-profit organization, dedicated to promoting peace and support of Israel, presented resolutions passed by the parliaments of 15 Latin American states recognizing the violation of Schalit’s human rights and demanding his release.

Chief Ashkenazi Rabbi Yona Metzger noted the special significance of the mitzva of redeeming a prisoner, the most meaningful of the benevolent deeds between people, and the weight powerful states like Brazil could have on expediting Schalit’s release.

Public Diplomacy and Diaspora Affairs Minister Yuli Edelstein evoked the powerful image of the Chilean miners’ rescue from their temporary underground captivity, who unlike Schalit had one another for support and consolation, and spent 69 days underground compared to Schalit’s 1,579, as of Thursday.

“People all around the world must follow AMISRAEL’s example and cry out the simple message – ‘Free Gilad!’” Edelstein said.

“It is moving to see how Gilad’s release has become a global issue,” Noam Schalit said, noting that the mechanism to rescue his son was here in Jerusalem, where decisionmakers must reach “brave decisions.”

“We believe that a true commitment to human rights requires a commitment to support peace and security for Israel, and in particular the immediate release of Gilad Schalit,” said Dr.

William Soto, international director and founder of AMISRAEL, who flew in from Brazil especially for the event.

“By gathering broad support from peoples of diverse ethnic and religious backgrounds, we also hope to show the people of Israel that they are not alone, and that there is a strong community rallying to support their rights.”

AMISRAEL Brings Shalit's Plight to Latin America
by Maayana Miskin

The AMISRAEL organization held a conference Thursday in Jerusalem after years of working to spread awareness of the plight of kidnapped IDF soldier Gilad Shalit, who was taken captive by Hamas in 2006 as he patrolled at a crossing outside Gaza. Gilad's father Noam Shalit was at the conference, as was AMISRAEL director and founder Dr. William Soto, Chief Ashkenazi Rabbi Yona Metzger, and Minister Yuli Edelstein.

Dr. Soto handed Noam Shalit 15 parliamentary resolutions, made by 15 separate national parliaments in Latin America, demanding that Gilad Shalit be released immediately.

“What we are doing here today is to show the people of Israel and the Shalit family that they are not alone, and that the hearts of millions of people on the other side of the world are with you,” Soto said. Regarding Hamas, he said, “If they want to establish a sovereign state in Gaza, the first step is showing acceptance of human rights and core universal values expected of every other state across the globe.”

Noam Shalit accepted the resolutions, and said, “It is very touching to see that the matter of my son is no longer just an Israeli problem, and I give deep thanks to AMISRAEL for making this a truly global issue.”

Despite it's name, which in Hebrew means “the nation of Israel,” AMISRAEL is primarily a non-Jewish group. “We deeply appreciate the love and friendship displayed by so many gentiles through AMISRAEL,” said Rabbi Metzger.

“Free Gilad. It's a simple statement; everybody can relate to it,” said Edelstein. “It doesn't require any additional explanation or additions.”
